‘The Palantír’

Oil on Canvas | 26” x 22“

Loosely based on the artifact of the same name from the J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Palantír is an indestructible ball of crystal used for communication and to see events in other parts of the world, whether past or future. In this painting it is held by a woman who through it, rather than seeing the world, is able to activate the inner realms of her imagination.

About the Artist

The paintings of Katie Swatland are an intrinsic dance between reality and rêverie. Drawing from her training as a painter whose lineage can be traced back to masters such as John Singer Sargeant, Antonio Mancini and Anders Zorn, she approaches the canvas as a means of discovery, carrying on in the spirit of the Romantic and Symbolist traditions of the past. Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, she is a passionate advocate of cross-disciplinary undertakings, and it is the unbounded landscape of the Arts to which she is most drawn.
